“#BlackMuslimGirlFly® – A Butterfly Amidst Iniquity”
As Black Muslim female filmmakers we decided to show the world a glimpse of us by telling the story of two Black Muslim Women in America who are being filmed by two Black Muslim Women filmmakers as part of a short film of what it is like to be a Black Muslim Woman in America.
Culminating in the historic Leimert Park, the short film “#BlackMuslimGirlFly: A Butterfly Amidst Iniquity,” ends at Black Iftar L.A., one of the many iftars (daily breaking of the fast during the holy month of Ramadan) hosted by Black Muslims across America, and around the world. We sought to incorporate our Black Muslim culture: poetry, music, photography, spoken word, and storytelling that is often erased in the conversation about American Muslims.
**Nia wrote, directed, and produced, along with her colleague, Art Director, Ayanna Qadeem (who also served as cinematographer,) and they completed the film in less than a week to make the deadline for several grants.**
*They are still applying for funding to create more films that center the stories of Black Muslim Girls and Women. #BlackMuslimGirlFly®
